Oud (oriental lute)

Elias Bachoura
© Marc Gysens

These lessons aim to develop the classical and modern technique of the oud by studying oriental methods. The repertoire to be taught during the lessons will be oriental music (Syriac, Syrian, Turkish, Iraqi, Egyptian) and also classical Western music for oud. Even though no pre-requisites are necessary, music theory will take up a large part of the lessons due to the possibilities and advantages it gives musicians. The theoretical part of the lessons will look at the different aspects of the instrument throughout history.

Elias Bachoura

Elias Bachoura studied at the Conservatory of Music in Damas, Syria, his country of origin. After arriving in Brussels, he studied composition and orchestration at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. With time, he has acquired knowledge of both oriental and western music which makes him critical and attentive of all styles of music. The subtlety, touch and innovation of his playing has made him a key musical reference. He currently plays in the Flemish orchestra ‘Olla Vogala’.

The oud

This oriental lute appeared in Mesopotamia between 2170 and 2350 BC. The instrument is played in G and its 6 cords – played with a plectrum called a Richah – produces a beautiful, warm sound. Played throughout the Arab world, the oud is used to accompany a large variety of different music.

Is music theory needed ? No, but it’s a plus.
