The course

We will study this vase shaped percussion instrument following a musical repertoire from the Maghreb, Middle-East and the Far East. The technical foundation lies upon a Turkish percussion technique (split hand), after which we will delve into a wide range of cultures and styles : from the 6/8 rhythms of the Moroccan châabi, to Indian rhythms.

The course will be accustomed to the student’s playing level, from beginners of all ages to advanced drabki’s that want to extend their technical and rhythmical possibilities.

The teacher :

Simon Leleux graduated as a pedagogue at the University of Namur. Currently he is studying at the Rotterdam University with Levent Yildrim, one of the greats of darbuki playing. As a 10 year old boy he started playing Eastern and Middle-Eastern percussion instruments and throughout the years he was trained by Azzedine Jazouli, Mahmoud Rezgaoui, Misirli Ahmet, Zohar Fresco,...

He has performed with groups and musicians, such as Emre Gültekin/Vardan Hovanissian, Auster Loo, Khalid Izri, Lâmekân Ensemble, Claire Spineux, Orbál, Surprises Du Chef, Sysmo…

"The future of a drummer is in oriental rhythms" (jazz drummer Billy Hart)
