Zehnder & Schirmer (Switzerland), Egschiglen (Mongolia)

The two acts of this evening’s concert both feature a very distinctive vocal technique known as ‘throat singing’ or ‘overtone singing’. A low chest note forms the basis for generating a range of much higher head harmonics by skilfully manipulating the body’s resonances. As if by magic, one person produces two melodies simultaneously, and the sound is just as ethereal as you might expect.

Beyond categorisation as an artist in a world music, jazz, pop, folk or contemporary music tradition, vocal master Christian Zehnder takes his inspiration from traditional Swiss music and combines it with modern music, not without a few subtle yodelling effects. Mysterious, disturbing and exciting, this virtuoso overtone singer is an orchestra in himself. Quite apart from his amazing throat, his talents as an actor will no doubt come to the fore in his concert. A former member of the celebrated group Stimmhorn, on this occasion he will be accompanied by Barbara Schirmer on the tympanon, a trapezoidal zither whose metal strings are struck with light hammers.

The music of Egschiglen impresses by virtue of its variety and gracefulness. The solo vocalist Amra sings in khomii style, a special throat singing in which the overtones are modulated while singing the base melody, and accompanies himself on the swan throat lute. Tume and Tumruu sing and play the horse-head violin, a string instrument with two strings made of horse hair. Saran is an expert at the dulcimer and the female voice of the band. Boogi is her virtuoso equal on asian percussion and 2nd solo singer. Their pieces often have the original enchanting power of folk traditions.

This two-sided concert was organised in cooperation with Les jeunesses musicales as an invitation to open yourselves up to a new and surprising experience, be bowled over by the dynamic music of these incomparable virtuosos, and take a new look at a very old tradition.
