An evening of Indian Classical Music

Bert Cornelis-Shahbaz Hussain-Vijay Rajput
(support: François-Alexandre Philippe – Olivier Leclerc – Bernard Flamand)

Friday 5 March 2009, 20.00, Molière, Naamsepoortgalerij/Galerie de la Porte de Namur, Bolwerksquare 3 Square du Bastion, 1050 Brussels

For this evening’s entertainment, sitar player Bert Cornelis was given carte blanche to put together three concerts representing the diversity of classical Indian music in all its glory and indeed, that is what we have here.
We open with a short trio concert featuring some of the talented musicians that Bert has discovered and brought to the fore. For this item, Francois-Alexandre Philippe and Olivier Leclerc on sitar will be accompanied by the tabla playing of Flamand Bernard.
Before the interval, we will also have a tabla solo from Shahbaz Hussain. While he has accompanied many of the most acclaimed masters of classical Indian music – Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Ustad Imrat Khan and Pandit Ashok Pathak, to name but a few – Shahbaz Hussain is recognised worldwide as a remarkable solo artist.
After the interval, we will have a jugalbandhi between master musicians Bert Cornelis (sitar) and Vijay Rajput (vocals), a duet accompanied on tabla by Shahbaz Hussain. A jugalbandhi is a duet – and almost a competition – between two soloists in the form of improvised exchanges. Each artist, in turn, challenges the virtuosity of the other, leading to a display of skill that promises to be quite dazzling.
