Siberian Shamanic Vocals

Julia Charkova (Khakassia)
Albina Degtyareva (Yakutia (Sakha)

Friday 13 november 2009, 20.00, Molière, Naamsepoortgalerij/Galerie de la Porte de Namur, Bolwerksquare 3 Square du Bastion, 1050 Brussels

This two part evening brings us music from Yakutia (Sakha) and Khakassia, two Russian Federation republics. Albina Degtyareva excells in the techniques of harmony chants and is also a virtuoso on the khomus – the Siberien jew's harp. Her fine playing provides contrasting tones and deploys around her an environment which is as rich as a landscape made up of images, sounds, perfumes and impressions. Her surprising techniques which are sometimes percussional, reveals her breath and expression. Albina also masters traditional popular songs from the nose, throat and palate like the khabarha yrata or the tanalai yryata. Delicate and with nuances, this musician is linked to a collection of beliefs and shaman practices which exalt a nature which she wishes to honour correctly.

From Khassassia, Julia Charkova plays zither and sings using multiple techniques. Impressed by these epic songs taught to her by her father, she sings the takhpakh and plays instrumentals.
